What clients say
About us
I'm Sano—my full name is Arsana Guna—the founder of Sanosurfbali. I've been surfing since my early childhood and decided to turn my passion into my profession more than 13 years ago. Since then, I have loved sharing my surfing experience and knowledge with my students every day. Those who are interested can also learn more about Balinese culture.
Sanosurfbali is a surf coaching team. Besides me, it also includes Jhony, Bolu and Tomo. We all have one thing in common: we want to make your surfing lessons a special experience – safe, fun and with progress. No matter how old you are or whether you are a beginner or intermediate surfer. Our home is Kedungu Beach, which offers three surf spots ranging from easy to advanced.
Surfing with us
There are 6 principles that are very important to us as your surf coaches
1. We make you feel safe
Only those who feel comfortable and safe can make progress. This is not only true for beginners. Every surf spot is different and every surf day depends on weather, tides, mood and condition. Before we go into the water, we warm-up to avoid injuries. I support you while paddling out and back. If necessary, I train techniques like Eskimo Roll ("Turtle Dive") and others.
2. We offer you best conditions
I want you to practise with the best possible conditions: Which surfboard shape and size provides the best possible progress and fun today? Which spot offers you the most pleasant conditions? Of course I have favorites like the beaches in Canggu and Kedungu (10 kilometers in the North). But if it's better to you, I'll also go to Nusa Dua. I'm not happy until you are!
3. We pick you up or meet you
You live very close to one of the surf beaches? - Then we can meet directly there. You live further away or want to get to know a new surf spot? - Then I will pick you up directly at your accommodation and we can use the time during the ride to get to know each other. Or we just chat a round :-)
4. We make you know the spot
Every spot has specialities. I explain everything you need to know: What are the geographical conditions? What to look for in the water like rocks or sandbars? Where is the "channel" - best way to paddle out? You may also be interested in temples, ceremonies taking place on the beach or waterfalls. On a cloudless day you can see Mount Agung from Kedungu Beach.
5. We care for your progress
After each wave I explain exactly what you did right and what you can improve - if needed again and again and again :-) That's my job which I really love. What can you do to improve your take-off? How do you get a better balance? How can you speed up? If you want, we can make video recordings and analyze them after surfing with a cool drink or a coconut.
6. We make sure you have fun
Surfing should be fun for you first of all. Because without fun it is impossible to learn surfing. Sometimes there are days when things are going great. And then comes that day when just nothing wants to work out. My students say that I always have an idea or a joke to put them in a good mood. Often it works out again :-)

Surfspots
Kedungu
Kedungu Beach is a beautiful stretch of black volcanic sand with a mellow, local vibe – one of those places where Bali still feels real. It’s about 10 km from Canggu (30 minutes by scooter) and easy to reach via the paved road Jalan Pantai Kedungu.
Peaks & conditions
Peaks & Conditions
Kedungu is a surf spot with three main peaks. The left peak is the most forgiving and a great zone for beginners and improvers, especially on smaller days. The two main peaks are more powerful and faster, attracting intermediate to advanced surfers looking for punchier sections and more performance-oriented waves.
Kedungu is mostly a reef break with lefts and rights, and the vibe changes a lot depending on swell and tide.
Beach info
There’s a parking lot at the end of the road at the beach. You’ll find toilets, showers, and plenty of warungs for snacks, coconuts, and post-surf meals. Surfers often meet at Kedungu Surf Shack, run by a crew of local surf coaches – also a great spot for board rentals, coffee, and a chilled hangout.
Canggu
Canggu is Bali’s buzzing surf town on the west coast – a mix of beach clubs, rice fields, cafés, and a super active surf scene. The coastline is a run of dark sand beaches with consistent waves and an anything-goes energy, from first-timers on soft tops to locals ripping at sunrise. Parking is easy and usually inexpensive (paid parking at most beach entrances).
Peaks & Conditions
Canggu has two iconic peaks: Batu Bolong and Old Man’s. Both are popular, user-friendly waves compared to some of Bali’s heavier reefs – just expect crowds and lots of learners in the water.
Best time: early mornings for cleaner conditions. Tide and swell size change the vibe a lot—bigger days get more challenging (and the lineup gets more serious).
Beach Info
Canggu is packed with hip cafés, rentals and surf schools right by the beach. You’ll find snacks, drinks and board rentals everywhere – easy to surf early, then grab coffee and breakfast a few steps away.
Sanur
Sanur sits on Bali’s east coast and feels like the calmer, classic side of the island – palm-lined beaches, sunrise sessions and a more relaxed pace than the west. The surf here is mostly reef-based and often cleaner and more organized when conditions line up. To reach the breaks you go by surf taxi boat at Pantai Mertasari out to the reef – it’s part of the experience and the easiest way out.
Peaks & Conditions
Sanur has two main peaks: Baby Reef and Main Reef. These breaks can be super fun, but because they’re reef waves, they reward good timing and control.
Sanur is known for cleaner morning surf and conditions can shift a lot with tide and swell. On lower tides it can get shallow, so reef awareness matters.
Beach Info
Sanur has a long beachfront promenade with plenty of cafés and warungs. The shoreline vibe is chilled and sunrise here is a Bali highlight. Organizing the surf taxi is straightforward, and you’ll find everything you need nearby before and after your session.
Serangan
Serangan is a small island off Bali’s southeast side and the surf here is a proper reef-wave mission – rawer and “core surf” than the mainstream beaches. These days, you can’t simply drive up and paddle out: since beach access was closed around 2018, the reef is typically boat-access only. You start in Sanur and take a surf taxi boat from Pantai Mertasari out to the reef. Paid parking is available around the Mertasari beach area.
Peaks & Conditions
Serangan is a reef break that can deliver clean and real power – especially in Bali’s wet season, when it’s often a go-to “plan B” for quality surf.
Beach Info
Because you launch from Sanur (Mertasari), your “base” is basically Sanur’s beachfront: easy to grab snacks before you go and plenty of warungs to refuel after your session. The boat pickup is commonly done right from Mertasari Beach, so it’s a smooth setup for a surf trip.
Nusa Dua
Nusa Dua sits on Bali’s east / southeast coast and has a totally different feel from the west side – clearer water, more “open ocean” energy and a lineup that can go from fun to serious really fast. A lot of the waves here are reef breaks and wet season (roughly Nov–Mar) is a classic time.
Peaks & Conditions
Nusa Dua has several named peaks, but three of the best-known are Black Stone (often called Black Rock), Mushroom Rock and Sri Lanka.
- Black Stone: a go-to in the area with shifting peaks and both lefts and rights depending on the day. It can be fun and user-friendly in smaller surf, but the main peak can still get steep and fast when it’s on.
- Mushroom Rock: a fast, punchy right-hander that’s known for speed down the line and can get hollow – it’s often best on higher tide, and on bigger days it’s more of an expert wave.
- Sri Lanka: an offshore reef setup that can light up when there’s more swell –generally more for intermediate to advanced surfers who are comfortable with reef and power.
Beach Info
Nusa Dua is close to the resort area, so it’s easy to find parking, food and facilities nearby. Access depends on the peak: some breaks are doable with a paddle from shore while others can involve longer paddles.

My home spot is the beautiful beach of Kedungu, but I teach you at any spot around Canggu and North Kuta.
